Thinking XXX (Extended Cut)

Thinking XXX (Extended Cut) Review

A companion to photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders book on porn stars, THINKING XXX is an entertaining glimpse into the world of porn from the actual porn stars who make it happen. The documentary itself, not surprisingly, is about the photographs, how they came about, why Greenfield-Sanders (a very noted photographer who has photographed presidents) was interested in porn stars, and what he is trying to show with his photos. This alone is worth watching. But it is not the best part of this dvd.

The best part comes in the extras, especially the porn stars themselves simply talking about their lives in the industry. Some of it is poignant, some sad, some hilarious, some pompous (with the award on that one going to Sunrise Adams, who we tells us, her voice full of self-importance, that she's "a very complex person"). This stuff is better than any porn movie script.

Also worthwhile are some of the commentaries. Gore Vidal making a buffoon of himself by blathering on about political theory a la some lefty professor who thinks he is more clever than he really is because of his ability to weave together disparate strings of social/cultural phenomena into some vaguely coherent whole, not recognizing just how loose his associations really are. Whitley Strieber comparing his ostracism as a UFO abductee to that of porn stars. Karen Finley talking on without realizing just how irrelevant her feminist viewpoint is to people outside her ideological bubble. Really, it's good stuff.

And then, also in the extras, some clips from the opening shows in New York and LA, where porn stars get to feel all mainstream by mingling with Ben Stiller and his girlfriend. I loved the part where Stiller's girl states to some porn star, "Oh, that's so great." Yeah, sure, if it's so great, break up with Ben and do porn yourself! Entertaining in that certain way in which we see the humor in completely different people trying to act like they're really all in it together, THINKING XXX, in addition to being fun viewing, reminds us why porn is more fun the less respectable it is. Intellectualizing Porn - Bryan A. Pfleeger - Metairie, Louisiana United States
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders has photographed artists, rock stars, actors and presidents. In 2004 he turned his large format camara on another group of celebrities, porn stars. Choosing to shoot his models twice: once fully clothed once naked Greenfield-Sanders creates images that are both erotic and thought provoking.

This HBO documentary is essentially a making of feature for his book XXX:Thirty Porn Star Portraits. The stars are interviewed as they prepare for the shoot, at home and even in traffic. What the film does is make the stars real people. Some have great things to say about porn in our culture. They address race, AIDS, money making and the business aspects of porn. These are all stars of the industry and very few have anything negative to say about their chosen profession.

The actual film runs an hour in its extended version but the true worth of this package is the extended interviews with all thirty models. The interview segment run about two additional hours and features a lot of insights into the businesss of sex and those who are engaged in it. Also featured is about an hour of interview material with writers and cultural figures who try to explain the porn phenomenon. There is a photo gallery of Greenfield-Sanders work and some clips from the New York and LA gallery openings.

While this offering may not be for all tastes there is a wealth of cultural information here that is worth checking out.

I Dream Of Jeanie [Slim Case]

I Dream Of Jeanie [Slim Case] Review

I've grown up hearong these songs, but I have never known the story behind the great composer! I am going to refute another customer's view of this movie. In the scene where Stephen tears up his room, the girl he was engaged to (Inez) told him that his music was the reason that she wasn't going to marry him. Steve loved his music, and he loved Inez, but when she told him that she didn't love him anymore, the only sounds he heard were his songs, louder and louder. The very things he loved were all being taken a way, and even his beloved music was turning on him. This is a story about triumph over despair, and one genious' struggle with himself. A truly great classic. Compatible with all DVD players.

Good DVD for a dollar or two - LF - USA
The back cover of the DVD case says this classic film has stood the test of time. I wouldn't go that far. I think in some ways it passed the test of time, and in other ways it failed.

First the positives. The music may be old fashioned but it is the strength of the movie. Stephen Foster songs are performed by several artists here, and they put on a good show.

It is odd to see some of the songs done in black face, with some of the black caricatures done for comedy. This movie is from the Al Jolson era. The black face makeup underlines the fact that one of the largest influences on Stephen Foster's music was black music. Yes, another white artist borrowing black music. Shades of Elvis. Even the Beatles started off doing Smoky Robinson and the Shirelles, and who can forget George Harrison's version of the Crystals song He's So Fine, renamed My Sweet Lord.

Stephen Foster is in love with Inez. The problem is, Inez hates his music. She's into classical music. Oh Susanna disgusts her. One problem with this movie is the phoniness of this part of the plot. Inez plays a woman who is too good for this world, who should spend her life singing opera. In a sense, she is the villain of the film because of her snobbishness. I don't buy it. I think the writers decided to choose a snobby villain. It's a safe target, but an unreal one. It's idiotic. I don't believe the character.

I'm not saying that there aren't people who love classical music and despise popular music of the day. Sure there are. What I'm reacting to is that the writers chose an easy target, the snob, and my intuition tells me that this bears no relation to reality. It's just a phony script.

Stephen goes so far as to rip up his song lyrics, being desperately in love with Inez. In this scene, there is a lot of melodrama. He's staggering around his room, upsetting the furniture, ripping the song lyric sheets, all because of Inez's attitude. The scene is embarrassingly bad. It's stupid.

Meanwhile, Inez's little sister Jeanie (thus the song, and the title of the movie), is in love with Stephen. She witnesses her big sister kissing another man, and drags Stephen in to the room to witness it too.

One thing about the plot that I do believe is that Stephen, or for that matter any man, could be so in love with a woman that he obsesses over her despite the fact that she's not right for him and someone else is.

Will we have a happy ending here? Will Stephen get over his doomed love for Inez and transfer it to little sister Jeanie? Well, duh, apparently it was Stephen Foster who wrote I Dream Of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, so where does that leave us?

Despite the fact that parts of the plot are downright stupid, other parts of the developing story are enjoyable, and the music is worth your dollar or two. I recommend that you pick up the movie, particularly if you don't have to pay for shipping. Make it part of a larger order and use Super Saver shipping, and you're all set.

The film left me laughing. It was unintentional on the part of the director. Here you have Stephen Foster (surprise surprise) realizing that he loves Jeanie, and he is in the process of telling her so, and suddenly he breaks into song, composing on the spot his lyrics to I Dream Of Jeanie, and belting it out. It's too funny.

Face

Face Review

Mothers/Daughters...Daughters/Mothers: no matter what country, what city, what culture there are always issues, disputes and of course the ritual rite of passage of breaking the apron strings.
In "Face" all of these issues are even more convoluted because into the mix we have a Grandmother (the wonderful Kieu Chinh so good in "Joy Luck Club"), the particular restrictions of the Chinese culture, an African-American boyfriend (Treach as Michael) and a daughter Genie (Kristy Wu), who was deserted at a young age by her career obsessed Mother (Bai Ling): who returns from Hong Kong with the hopes to re-connect with her daughter.
Particularly memorable here is the romance between Michael and Genie which flips the usual man/woman relationship on its head by having Michael,a Club DJ, as the more committed, the more willing of the two to declare his emotions and as portrayed by Treach, an unusual and persuasive mix of in your face machismo and hearts and flowers valentine card.
Director and co-writer, Bertha Bay- Sa Pan obviously knows this terrain well and she empowers all of these women, but particularly Genie with a quick wit, horse sense and a fiery, impassioned intelligence.
"Face" is about how we are perceived and limited because of what is on our exterior: imprinted on our face by way of our heritage. Bertha Bay-San Pa spends an hour and a half blasting those stereotypical thoughts and attitudes into the stratosphere once and for all.
A traditional Chinese-American teenager falls in love with a Harlem Hip-Hop DJ in this drama about clashing cultures. Abandoned by her mother, Kim (Bai Ling), Genie (Kristy Wu) is a Chinese-American teenager who has been raised by her loving, but traditionally valued grandmother. When Genie falls in love with a charming African-American DJ, Michael (Treach) she realizes this forbidden love threatens to ruin the only familial bond she has

Surprisingly good movie - Grown and sexy - Fort Washington, Maryland United States
I ran across this movie channel surfing and was quickly swept in. It's a little of The Joy Luck Club meets Guess who's coming to dinner!

I stumbled onto this movie one weekend - I got my copy 10 days later. For me, the clashing/merging of Asian and African-American cultures was an interesting juxtaposition. I recommend the movie - it's a little different...Five stars...

Dinosaur Island

Dinosaur Island Review

See more picture

This DVD is a full length animated features, very fun for kids, suitable for age 6 and up. In the story, a new game show sends young Leo, Jackie, Margaret, and Alex to a remote island. There they will compete against each other in a survival challenge for a chance to win a million dollars. But on the way their plane crashes in an uncharted island, where they are forced to team up to survive. And by the way, there are dinosaurs. T-Rexes, Raptors, Pterodactyls and more dinosaurs are to be found on the island. This show is a fast paced action-adventure movie. This movie is one of those that parents or babysitting teens will not mind watching too. My 13 year old still likes it. Released in 2002 and it is 75 minutes long.

Now to be sure, this is not a National Geographic or Discovery Channel documentary, and the dinosaurs are cartoons. They could be a lot more frightening and realistic as one reviewer points out, but they work great for a kids animated feature. It is a fun show.

The same animation studio, "DIC", has released other titles to video and TV, such as animated versions of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island, Globehunters, Zorro, and Dinosaur Island. The last 2 titles are really good. They also made the Archie's movies and the Inspector Gadget. Extras on the disc are Inspector Gadget info and fun facts. DVD quality is good, picture and sound clean, no issues with freezing up or anything. It's the Adventure of a Lifetime...If They Make It Back Alive!

Brace yourself for action, excitement and edge-of-your-seat suspense, as four teens struggle to save themselves from extinction in a mysterious land of prehistoric predators! T-Rexes, Raptors, Pterodactyls and more - they're all hungry for adventure...on Dinosaur Island! It sounded simple enough: The hot new reality show "Wild World" would fly teenagers Leo, Margaret, Jackie and Alex to a remote area of the Amazon where they would battle the elements - and each other - to become the ultimate survivor and claim a million-dollar prize. No problem...until their jet crashes in an uncharted land, forcing the teens to devise a new set of rules: Team up...or become an afternoon snack for a stampede of roaring reptiles!

Street Life Review

Funny, the film was a little strange, but I totally understood the point. What you do will come back to haunt you. I laughed a lot despite some scenes not suppose to be funny. Great camera work on a couple of scenes. For a first timer I give the writer/director a two thumbs up... Desperation permeates the slums of Memphis, where survival is a day -to-day game. One group of would-be thugs decides that the only way out is to hijack semi trucks full of expensive electronics, then split their treasure amongst themselves and those less fortunate around them. When they re leader entrusts his newly found riches with a crooked banker he soon finds that it s HE who s been robbed, and will stop at nothing to redeem his fortune. Can he plan one last heist to prevail as a hero to the downtrodden before the law puts an end to his Street Life for good? (don t use this part) The trucks they chose are delivering high-end electronic equipment. Hacker-hermit Gil aids their precision thefts from behind the glow of his computer screen. Gil has hacked into servers of several truck companies, allowing him real-time access to delivery times and shipping manifest. Once the trucks are stolen their contents are delivered to a guy by the name of Fence. He and Jarez work out the terms of sale and Jarez is supposed to split the money evenly with the group. However, he decided long ago to keep 50% of the money and only share half with his partners in crime. The only person that knows of his plan is Gil of which he splits 50% with. Jarez thinks of himself as a modern day Robin Hood, intending to give portions of the hidden money to those who are less fortunate. However, he doesn t get the chance. He has been convinced to invest his money with a Hedge fund banker. Dan Turnkey, the banker runs of with the money leaving Jarez cashless. Looking for an Echo

Looking for an Echo Review

See more picture

In a rather forgettable angst-filled Ingmar Bergman film, one angst-filled character says to another angst-filled character--and I paraphrase: "Are some people better at life than others?"

Yes, the film "Looking for an Echo" would exclaim: some peoples' lives are blessed with magic.

Vinnie, a former teen idol, has that magic. Despite significant challenges later in his life, (which can be correctly guessed at from miles away) the challenges are resolved (their resolutions can also be correctly guessed at from miles away). And Vinnie's charmed life continues on its magical way.

Cliches of cliches; all is cliche. . .there is nothing new under the sun in this predictable movie.

Yet cliche is more watchable than angst. This movie, if you can overlook the cliches--which is not always easy, is moving. Most particularly moving is the music, which is--allow the word, allow the cliche--magical. THIRTY YEARS HAVE TAKEN ITS TOLL ON VINCE PIRELLI, THE TEENAGEHEARTTHROB LEAD SINGER OF VINNIE AND THE DREAMERS. NOW HE MUSTFACE THE FADED GLORY OF HIS PAST IN THIS MOVING AND UNFORGETTABLE STORY.
