Ben-Hur (Four-Disc Collector's Edition)

Ben-Hur (Four-Disc Collector's Edition) Review

Do you have a favorite movie? Is there a movie that is better than all the rest? In my opinion, BEN-HUR is the Best. It is the story of how a man learns that to live by love is much more beneficial than trying to do so filled with hate. It shows how God's love overcomes all. Ben-Hur,s faith gets him through many tough trials, although there are times when he almost looses it. One thing in the movie that really impressed me was: whenever they portrayed Jesus, His face was not shown. They showed His kindness, generosity, and love by what He did and by the reactions of others and the looks on their faces. There is some romance involved and some history and much Bible; and the famous horse race; one good line I appreciated was "don't treat my horses like animals!" This movie will arise most of your emotions:Love, hate, comedy, fear; also include loyalty and hope. The numbers speak volumes: 100,000 costumes, 8,000 extras, 300 sets and a staggering budget in its day the largest in movie history. Ben-Hur's creators made it the best, the greatest Biblical-era epic ever. Charlton Heston brings a muscular physical and moral presence to the role of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman in Palestine whose heroic odyssey includes enslavement by the Romans, a bold escape from an embattled slave galley, vengeance against his tormentors during a furious arena chariot race and fateful encounters with Jesus Christ. Heston's charismatic performance brought him the Best Actor Oscar; the winner as 1959's Best Picture with the legendary William Wyler earning his third Best Director trophy, the film won a total 11 Academy Awards -- a tally unequaled until 1997's Titanic set sail.

DVD Features:

Mysteries of the Bible: Greatest Secrets [VHS]

Mysteries of the Bible: Greatest Secrets [VHS] Review

The archeologists in this special are interested in the Bible as a book of history. They find it interesting to see if they can prove it to be a reliable source and apparently they have concluded that in most cases it is.

You will see places where Abraham walked or see the remains of the destruction of the walls of Jerico. This is worth watching to see the "Mona Lisa of Galilee." The pictures I've seen online are fine, but they don't quite show the beauty like this video does.

Eric and Carol Meyers also found a "religious" descendant of the original "ark" at the same time as the "Raiders of the lost Ark" came out. Coincidence or fate? Perhaps a private joke enjoyed by God?

Then we have the mystery of Masada which only gets more mysterious because the historical account points to a mass suicide, while not that many bones have been found.

This is perhaps the most captivating of the "Mysteries of the Bible" series.

~The Rebecca Review In the Holy Land today, dozens of specialized archaeologists and their teams sift through the sands of history. Their quest: to unlock the mysteries of vanished civilizations and their peoples. What are the origins of the special discipline known as "Biblical archaeology?" What light has the science shed on the Scriptures? And what enthralling secrets have they discovered? Journey through the portals of time with some of the greatest archaeologists in history, from the eccentric Sir William Flinders Petrie who willed that his head be removed and preserved after death to the husband-and-wife team of Eric and Carol Meyers. Join them as they risk everything in the search for crucial clues. And take a look at the high-tech tools that could someday help their colleagues answer civilization's enduring questions.

Christy - A Change of Seasons

Christy - A Change of Seasons Review

I am a long-time fan of the original Christy series starring Kellie Martin in the title role. I wasn't impressed by the follow-up to the series, "Christy: The Return to Cutter Gap", especially with the startling changes in casting - Lauren Lee Smith as Christy had none of the earnestness and wide-eyed sincerity that was embodied by Kellie Martin. But, after that disappointing and lacklustre episode, I decided to give the second episode in the series a try, and was pleasantly surprised by the improved quality in acting.

In "Change of Seasons", a typhoid epidemic threatens the already fragile community of Cutter Gap, and Christy [Lauren Lee Smith] loses a beloved friend. This gives rise to a crisis of faith in Christy - she rails at God and wonders how a benevolent God could take away someone who was so good. In this particular episode, we witness Lauren Lee Smith coming into her acting - she is more convincing in her role here than she was in "Return to Cutter Gap", though by no means on par with Kellie Martin in terms of acting skills. The actor who replaces Randall Batinkoff as minister and preacher David, James Waterston, is also much more credible in his role here and there is genuine chemistry between him and Christy. David here is also much more convincing in his role as the staunch minister who firmly believes in his faith in God and helps Christy overcome her anger and temporary loss of faith.

I am still rather disappointed by Diane Ladd's performance as Ms Alice, and feel that her role will always be overshadowed by the superior acting of Tyne Daly in the original Christy. Dr MacNeill as played by Stewart Finlay-McLennan [the original actor] doesn't get much time in this particular episode but his acting is still as assured as ever in the role of the cynical mountain doctor who still has issues with God.

All in all, I liked this episode and felt it was not only entertaining, but ably handled the crisis of faith issue. I am now looking forward to viewing the last episode 'A New Beginning".

I saw this movie at the premier in San Antonio. Most of the film was shot in San Antonio, most of the crew are local as well. Overall I would call it a good B action movie. I liked the acting performances of the shop owners and the deaf robber and black robber. The insurance agent was hot as well. It's amazing the quality of film they delivered on the budget they were working with. Support your local artist, buy it. Studio: Laguna Productions Inc Release Date: 07/15/2008

There seems to be some confusion from people when they buy this DVD on what they will receive. If you are not familiar with the Classic Albums series (often played on VH1), they go through the process of mixing and mastering and creating an album. For musicians and die-hard fans, these programs give insight into the whole recording process.

Having seen several other Classic Albums shows such as Cream and The Band, I knew what to expect, but I also am married to a guitarist and am able to see the writing and production of songs firsthand. In addition, I am a HUGE U2 fan, and so this was definately interesting to me.

If you are looking for videos or concert footage, U2 has some excellent DVDs out there (and part of my own collection). But, if you want more insight on how albums are created and the work involved that goes into them, then this is the DVD for you. An outstanding entry in the Classic Albums video series, this hourlong documentary, produced in 1999, assembles the creators of U2's The Joshua Tree to comment about the musical magic that occurred a dozen years earlier in a home studio in Dublin. Merging past and present, coproducers Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, mixer Steve Lillywhite, and guitarist The Edge isolate separate tracks on the album's master tapes to illustrate how some of U2's greatest songs were layered with each individual's crucial contributions. Bono listens in while Lanois deconstructs the masters, appearing genuinely shy about his vocal tracks but eloquent in describing the album as "not Irish at all" in its innovative sound, but "very Irish" in terms of the emotions that inspired it. Later, The Edge describes the "cinematic" sound of the album, intended to transport the listener to a specific physical location based on each song's mood and atmosphere.

Bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen weigh in with illuminating comments, and the hour offers an abundance of video excerpts, concert footage, and memorable anecdotes. Eno sets the record straight on the torturous process of recording "Where the Streets Have No Name" (he almost "accidentally" erased the master tape in hopes of starting from scratch), and Bono admits to a heavy Led Zeppelin influence on "Bullet the Blue Sky." Archival footage shows the recording in progress (one wishes there were more of it), and what emerges from this collective reminiscence is an enlightening study of mutual chemistry and fruitful collaboration. Upon viewing this video, another listening to The Joshua Tree will be more rewarding than ever. --Jeff Shannon

Bela Lugosi Collection, Vol. 1

Bela Lugosi Collection, Vol. 1 Review

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.

BIOS:
1. Bela Lugosi (aka: Béla Ferenc Dezsõ Blaskó)
Date of birth: 20 October 1882 - Lugos, Austria-Hungary. [now Lugoj, Romania]
Date of death: 16 August 1956 - Los Angeles, California
2. Edward D. Wood Jr. (Director, Writer and Producer)
Date of birth: 10 October 1924 - Poughkeepsie, New York
Date of death: 10 December 1978 - North Hollywood, California

This collection of "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years --- but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten ... Plus the half-hour tribute "100 Years of Horror: Bela Lugosi", hosted by Christopher Lee --- and a great job by Passport Video for this release --- looking forward to more of the same from the '20s and '50s vintage...order your copy now from Amazon or Passport Video, stay tuned once again for more remarkable films from the vaults of classic television and Hollywood during the Golden Era of Entertaiment.

A Bela Lugosi Double Feature - Edward Garea - Branchville, New Jersey United States
As of late there have been many Lugosi movies released on DVD. This double feature is among the best. The Devil Bat (1940) is Lugosi's only movie for Producer's Releasing Corporation, one of Hollywood's many infamous Poverty Row studios. Bela plays Dr. Carruthers, a mad scientist out for revenge against the partners he felt double-crossed him. His instrument of revenge is an electronically enlarged bat, attracted to its intended victims by the odor of a strange perfume Bela has concocted for just this purpose. With a plot such as this, the movie could be simply flat and unwatchable. If not for Bela, that is. Faced with such a prospect and being the dedicated actor he was, Bela plays it up beautifully. Instead of merely being hammy and letting it go at that, he brings certain nuances to his role, using double entendres at times. (Inducing a potential victim to try his shaving lotion, he declares that the victim "will never use anything else.") In fact, he ends up winning our sympathy in a scene with one of his "partners" where it becomes somewhat apparent that poor old Bela was swindled into an inferior deal. No wonder he's mad. Assisting Bela in this wonderful nonsense is Dave O'Brien (Reefer Madness) as the hero, Donald Kerr as the hero's sidekick, and Suzanne Kaaren as the ingénue. Look for Arthur Q. Bryan, more famous as the voice of Elmer Fudd, as O'Brien and Kerr's boss.

Scared to Death is Lugosi's only color film, and as such, is a must for Lugosi fans and collectors. It is a tepid story narrated by a recently deceased woman from her slab in the morgue as to how she got that way. Billy Wilder later used a variation of this in Sunset Boulevard, but, of course, he did it much better. Given the almost total lack of any action in this film a more appropriate title might have been Bored to Death. Nat Pendleton and George Zucco offer whatever support they can to the proceedings. A note of interest is that while suffering from a form of dementia in a psychiatric hospital, George Zucco was said to have scared himself to death with visions of ghosts and demons coming after him. It certainly couldn't have been from watching this film.

Excellent quality of video transfer and easy to use menus make this a bargain for the price.

Christy - The Complete Series Review

This is show that is excellent family viewing. Wonderful Christian values are clearly displayed. While the characters are flawed, they learn and grow and focus on what really matters. Kelly Martin and Tyne Daly embody the roles so well you forget they are acting and assume this is who they really are.

I was sad to see Christy did not continue to be made ... at least to actually finish the story. I have not purchased or watched the additional two movies as I heard different actors played the roles, so there was no real sense of continuity. I hope she married Neil!

I have not read the book, so don't know how closely the series followed the story lines, but I don't think it matters. This is a show from which everyone can learn, or be reminded of, proper values and what really matters.

Based on the bestseller by Catherine Marshall "Christy" tells the story of an idealistic nineteen year old who leaves the comforts of her city home to teach school in the impoverished Appalachian community of Cutter Gap Tennessee in 1912. Strength determination and faith guide young Christy Huddleston through unforeseen difficulties help her to gain understanding of the proud mountain people and win her mentorship friendship and the love of two men.System Requirements:Run Time: 907 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 024543424376 Manufacturer No: 2242437

If you like HEIDI KLUM,the SI 2000 DVD will simply leave you in awe. I mean Heidi Klum casts a pretty large 'net'by sharing herself; as she's one of the most beautiful creatures on earth ( or simply put, she seems to really get around on the internet ) She is everywhere!

I suspect the SI folks know they have a woman who will propel far beyond her essential beginings. BUT THE DVD really is just a killer. She is drop dead gorgious in a lay-out with a snake, and other wildlife in Mylasia. With the animals she poses on, she poses the age old question of are all of these women in the SI swimsiut 2000 issue 'masters of the universe?' From what I saw of Heidi Klum, I'd say without a doubt. I believe most of us mortal men would follow most of them right off the edge of a cliff :-) I highly recommend this DVD The only other "thing" that blasts me in to utopia are the Beatles. Cool breezes, warm beaches, wild animals and the gently swaying palm trees of the Pacific provide the backdrop for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2000 video. Step into a behind-the-scenes look at our romp in paradise with the world's hottest models, who offer many intriguing thoughts on members of the opposite sex. Damon Wayans, along with newcomer Estella Warren, are your hosts for this exciting tour of the making of Sports Illustrated's Millennium Swimsuit Issue. Along the way you'll see supermodel Heidi Klum frolicking with a baby elephant on the sands of Malaysia, Christy Hinze galloping on horseback along the beach in Mexico, Daniela Pestova kissing a frog on the island of Pangkor Laut (will the frog turn into a prince?), as well as some top athletes and their significant others. Kim Possible has a secret--she has grown-ups among her fans.
And the show is better than anything on primetime
And why not? The humor, banter & wrting is better than any sitcom, & the whole package is WAY better than reality shows.

From the hit TV series, it's Kim Possible, just your average teenage girl out to save the world. She foils sinister plots around the globe with her sidekick Ron Stoppable and still makes it home in time for dinner. It's big fun as Kim takes on some seriously wacko bad guys in this way cool series of adventures. Here's the "sitch": Rufus, Ron's pet naked mole rat, goes 3-D and takes control of the "Kimmunicator" to guide you through three awesome Kim Possible missions, including a never-before-seen episode. This is the only place to catch all the thrills as the evil Dr. Drakken feigns love for the villainous DNAmy in order to take advantage of her mutation skills. It's cool. It's hot.
