Breakin' 2 - Electric Boogaloo Review
This movie is 100% 80s cheese. It's very entertaining, though. This is a sequel to the Breakin' movie, which is the better of the two. But if you like corny movies or 80s dance, you have to watch the second one just to experience it. Except for the 3 main characters that come back, the movie is very different from the first. Both movies focus more on dancing rather than story or acting, and that's just fine. This movie serves up plenty. Even though I think the first one is the better movie, I've actually watched this one more often. It just never gets boring.
The first movie felt more realistic, even though it had a Hollywood ending. The second seems to throw any sense of realism out the window and does it's best to entertain, bringing lots of dance and music in. It is extremely cheesy and corny, but very funny. Whether it's intentional or not, there are a lot of funny scenes. There is a dance or music sequence every five minutes, a lot of bright colored clothes, 80s hairstyles, a dancing on the ceiling scene, a dance-off "battle", even a mime mysteriously named "Magician"...now that's entertainment. Turbo and Ozone bring Kelly to Miracles, their local community center, to teach dance to street kids. Everyone is having a great time until the villain comes along and wants to tear down the building to put up a shopping center. Everyone bands together to try to save Miracles. The story is very predictable, but it doesn't matter because the movie moves along with rarely a dull moment. There are a few scenes in the middle of the film that aren't as great-like when they go to meet Kelly's parents. I usually just skip to the next one. One of the best is the bulldozer scene-you'll know it when you see it. Hilarious, but the music is cool too.
I know a lot of people compare it to the first. No it isn't as good if you are going to take it seriously...the first is okay for that...you just *can't* take this one seriously. It is just fun to watch, for laughs and for the dancing. Enjoy it for what it is...a fun trip to the 80s, a look at breakdancing and 80s fashions. The music is good too. Get ready for an "exuberant soul'train ride that bounces to the topsy-turvy beat of the street" (Los Angeles Times)! Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo captures the fun and flair of the '80sunderground breakdance phenomenon with electrifying moves, rapid-fire raps and nonstop music! Returning from the first film, Breakin', Lucinda Dickey, Adolfo "Shabba-Doo" Quinones and Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers combine talent and tenacity to save a community center from a greedy developer bent on building a shopping center in its place. The developer has city hall's approval, but the kids have heart and soul. And to raise money to keep the center alive, the crew pulls out all the stops, locks and pops in a dance show that will either make or break'their cause!
